We just had our dog, Billy, put to sleep after his kidneys started failing about three months ago. This week, he was down to only 10% kidney function, wasn’t eating at all and had an infection in his blood, so he’d been living at the vet since Wednesday.
Last night and this morning he had a series of seizures which, due to the medication he was given to keep them at bay, meant that he didn’t recognise us and had basically stopped responding to the world around him. Every breath was a struggle, but he was pain-free, warm, and (relatively) happy. We even took Ziggy in too to say goodbye.
I don’t want to carry on about this, but anyone who knows me or my family knows how much we love our dogs and treat them as part of the family. Billy was, without a doubt, the most wonderful dog we could have ever had. He was unfailingly kind and loving and never expected anything more from us than love and warmth. Seeing him as he was this morning, I know we made the right decision, but it doesn’t lessen the pain of losing a member of the family.
I love Billy and already miss him so much, but I’m glad that he’s no longer suffering and can finally be at peace.

Apologies to Flavia for the close up of your face, but I just love this photo of Billy because it looks like he’s smiling! He’s not well at the moment - not eating much, not interested in walks, losing weight and drinking lots of water. I took him to the vet this afternoon, as I could barely sleep last night worrying about him. The vet thinks he may have diabetes - which, out of all the things that could possibly be wrong isn’t the worst case scenario. At least it’s somewhat manageable.
I know I sound like a total sap, but I love Billy so much, and I hate that I don’t know what’s wrong with him, or how to look after him :(

Ok, so I do look crazy here, but Billy is sick and it’s awful. He’s got no energy and his back legs have lost their strength and he can’t walk very far without needing a rest.

Get well, my boy!

Looking through photos of our trips to the beach leads me to find these gems of little Ziglet.

He’s currently in Port Fairy with Billy (and Mum and Dad) and I miss them both tremendously so I’ll just pretend they’re here by looking at these photos all day long and crying quietly into my tea.

Oh my god, Flavia. Snugglefarm: Christmas Edition.
Could also see Billy/Ziggy in an ensemble like this. Just sayin.

We may already have one of these for Billy. Now we just have to locate one that’s tiny enough to fit Zig.

Whenever I eat anything, this little guy just stares at me like this, even when the food is well and truly gone. He only stops when I show him my empty hands and am given a look of complete and utter disdain.

I’ve convinced myself that Billy’s developed a complex thanks to years of this. I’m a terrible person.
